Meadowview Theatre

Meadowview TheatreCaprice starring Doris Day and Richard Harris was the first movie to be shown at the new Meadowview Theatre, when it opened on Friday, July 14, 1967.  Meadowview was built by L & M Management, who operated a number of theatres at the time, including the Luna Theatre and Starlite Drive-In in Kankakee.

Hans Teichert of Chicago, a well known artist and designer, was commissioned to create the interior design for the theatre.  Just past the box office was a sunken "living room" with a fireplace.  An iron railing separated this area from the rest of the lobby.  The auditorium walls were hand painted with interwoven designs in the latest style (for the late 60's).  The 840 seats were well spaced to provide maximum comfort.

Meadowview Theatre In 1975 a second auditorium was added alongside the original theatre.  This auditorium, shown in the photo to the right, was all brick with decorative wall hangings and had seating for 226 patrons.  Some time later the original auditorium was split, making the theatre a tri-plex.

Meadowview TheatreIn December 1990 the theatre was acquired by Classic Cinemas, who also had been operating (and still does) the Paramount theatre in Kankakee for two years.  The "living room" area was removed to make way for a new candy counter and to open up the lobby for better access to theatre #3.  The auditoriums are now handicap accessible and an accessible restroom has been added.  And over the years new seats, carpeting, paint, digital sound and the latest projection has been installed to enhance the movie-going experience.
